South Carolina is headed to Orlando, Florida, for the Citrus Bowl after a strong 9-3 season that included notable victories over Texas A&M, Missouri, and Clemson. The Gamecocks, ranked No. 15, will face No. 20 Illinois (9-3) on December 31, marking their first Citrus Bowl appearance since 2014. The game will be broadcast at 3 p.m. on ESPN as a New Year’s Eve showcase. Coach Shane Beamer expressed his excitement about the matchup, calling it the best possible outcome. Initially, it was expected that Alabama, which missed out on the College Football Playoff, might land the Citrus Bowl invitation, but the selection committee chose South Carolina instead.
While the Citrus Bowl appearance is cause for celebration, some Gamecock fans feel bittersweet after a season that saw South Carolina finish on a six-game win streak, including a victory over No. 12 Clemson. Despite a strong finish, the team was ranked No. 14 by the playoff committee due to head-to-head losses against Alabama and Ole Miss, preventing them from making the 12-team playoff. Coach Beamer, though frustrated with the decision, emphasized that his team is motivated to secure a 10th win in the bowl game. This will be the third bowl appearance under Beamer, and a win would make it only the fifth time in South Carolina history that the team has reached double-digit victories.
